Anthony of Padua, The Presentation in the Temple

Anthony of Padua is not the saint but an Istrian painter from the Istrian village of Kascerga, which was once known as Villa Padua.

The fresco is a very late example of a Western image of the Presentation in which Simeon's hands are covered. Three figures with haloes stand left of the altar. The one on the far left could be either Anna or Elizabeth. The one closer to the altar reaches for the child, who looks fixedly back at her. Best guess is that she is Mary, and that the unveiled young woman on the right side with the candle and basket is someone else, perhaps one of the virgins assigned to help Mary when she left her life in the Temple. But alternatively the virgin could be Mary while the figures on the left are Anna, Elizabeth, and perhaps St. Joseph. As for the young man in green, I have no idea.
